LIVING IN AUSTRALIA

TERMS OF USE
If you're thinking of migrating to Australia you've probably already done some research. On this page I've tried to provide links to some of the basic aspects of everyday living in Australia.

Australia is a federation of states and has a national Commonwealth Government. The role of the Commonwealth is to look after affairs of national importance (eg immigration and defence). Each of the six Australian states also has a government and is more concerned with particular state issues. Canberra is the national capital and Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Hobart are the state capitals. Sydney is Australia's largest city with a population of around 4 million people.

Click on the links in the map below to find more specific state and city links.

For more general information you might also try DIMIA's Life in Australia portal, the Guide to Australia  or City Search.

Getting a Job

If you don't have an established network of contacts in Australia then the best place to look for employment is through advertisements which appear in the newspapers or on the internet. Many positions are advertised directly by companies and others are advertised through recruitment consultants or agents.

Some of the sites to try are Mycareer, Seek , Careerone and Jobs.com

If you're specifically looking for a government job try the Jobsearch site or the Gazette.

Finding Somewhere to Live

Whether you intend to rent or buy, the vast majority of properties are offered through real estate agents who advertise in newspapers or through their web sites. The cost of property will vary depending on where you choose to live.

Three sites which include national listings are Domain, Realestate.com and Realnet.

Once you've found a house you think you are interested in you can use this online street atlas to find out where it is.

Cost of Living in Australia

Perhaps the best way to gauge the cost of living is to browse the websites of some of Australia's largest department and grocery stores:

Another indicator of the cost of living is the cost of petrol

If you're interested in wages and working conditions in Australia you should look at the Wagenet site.

Business, Taxation and the Australian dollar

The Business Entry Point is a comprehensive portal for information about establishing a business in Australia. The Australian Taxation Office site provides  information  for both individuals and businesses about Australia's tax system. It also includes links to some useful tax calculators.

You can use this exchange rate calculator to find out the current Australian Dollar's value against your local currency.

For  financial news and views see The Australian Financial Review.

Moving to Australia

Australia has strict quarantine laws to prevent the importation of diseases and plants and animals which could damage the unique ecosystem and agriculture.

Find out what you can and cannot bring into the country by exploring the websites for the customs and quarantine services.

The following newspaper and television websites provide information about local news and current affairs:
  • News Corporation (publisher of the national daily newspaper "The Australian");
  • F2 Network (publisher of "The Sydney Morning Herald" and "The Age");
  • the government owned national broadcaster ABC;
